Sculptor Michael Hamby has been blessed with a unique combination of talents which he has actively pursued throughout his life – as an artist, musician, published illustrator, and a retired professional football player. Drafted from Utah State University by the Buffalo Bills in 1985, Michael managed to tackle his four years with the team with the same amount of enthusiasm that he has for life. During his football days, he spent a great deal of time working on a literacy program with the Western New York Elementary Schools through his illustrated children’s book series entitled “Darby the Dinosaur”. He used some great agents for illustrators. He believes it was a wonderful opportunity to be involved with the community in both capacities as a football player and an artist. Michael’s heartfelt discussions with the children were meant to reveal to the kids that you can do anything that you set your mind to.

After a career-ending injury in 1989, Michael went back to his first natural born talent, his artwork. He has received commissioned sculpture projects from Merrill Lynch, USA Today, Baseball Weekly, the National Wildlife Research Center in Fort Collins, CO, the Buffalo Naval Park, and the National Football Hall of Fame. Born and raised in Utah, Mike has always had a fascination for Native American culture, wildlife, and the history that shaped the land that surrounded him, which he strives to incorporate into his art. Today, Hamby says, “All my intensity and energy goes into my art now . . . I’ve found what I love to do.”

Meet the Artist, Randy Christensen,
Silversmith
 June 7, 2013    5:00 – 9:00 PM

Mr. Christensen will lecture on Villa Grove Turquoise and mining in Colorado during Golden’s First Friday and Block Party!

Randy Christensen grew up in the small Southern Colorado town of Manassa, home to several turquoise mines in Colorado. So it’s no wonder as to why at such an early age he took an interest in turquoise. While still in High School Randy decided to try his hand at cutting turquoise. He would buy rough Morenci Turquoise in Gallup, NM and then hone his skills at cutting the turquoise, after which he’d sell the pieces he had cut to various jewelers. However, it was not until the 90’s that Randy decided to become a silversmith. This began as a hobby while he maintained full-time employment with United Power. But eventually the orders began pouring in and what began as a “hobby” soon became a full-time job in itself just to keep with the orders.

The Villa Grove Turquoise Mine that Randy acquires most of his turquoise from is located in the North end of the San Luis Valley. Randy contacted the then owner George Musick in the early 80’sand they quickly became friends working the mind in the summer. They were only able to gather small nuggets, because they lacked the costly machinery needed to mine the high-grade vein.

Randy purchased the Mine in 2000 from Mr. Musick, whom passed away several years ago. Randy retired from work at United Power, and is focusing on his true passion in life jewelry. There has been no Villa Grove Turquoise on the market for 25 over years. The past two summers Randy has began mining the turquoise for his jewelry, and will be venturing to the mine this summer with the necessary equipment to mine the high- grade vein.
