Heidi Riha

Heidi RihaHeidi grew up in Georgetown and also near Morrison, CO.   She still has strong family ties in CO and visits as often as possible. Heidi did much of her Art Studies in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where she immersed herself in stained glass work. Upon her return to the USA, she continued to work in stained glass as well as design.

In 2002 Heidi approached glass in a new light, using kiln formed glass to produce many new styles of draped and formed kiln glass to incorporate a bright , fun, and whimsical style.

In the artists words:

Photographer – Denver, CO

“I’m a photographer, outdoorsman, and dog lover currently working on a long-term project about working cowboys in the American West, and eager to collaborate with like-minded brands that believe in conserving Western culture and the beautiful lands/rivers we’re lucky to have.

To date I’ve also been lucky to shoot with sports legends like Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul, Draymond Green, Blake Griffin, John Wall and many others for clients like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, Reebok, Foot Locker, Fox Sports, New Balance, Vans, Puma, Uber, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian, Wrangler, Boot Barn, American Hat Co., WWE, TRX, Gym Shark, GNC, NBATV, SLAM, Outside Magazine, Runner’s World, New York Times, Western Art Collector Magazine, Western Horseman Magazine, Benelli, Patagonia, Duck Camp, Daily Mail, The Chicago Tribune, and San Diego Union Tribune to name a few. All of that makes me sound really important, but the truth is I just love being a photographer. Doesn’t matter if I’m photographing an elite athlete or a random guy on a river. I like using the camera to tell stories. Whether that story helps to define your brand or simply to give the viewer a glimpse into an unfamiliar world, the goal is always the same, to make great images.

When I’m not creating campaigns for commercial clients, I spend a great deal of time (35k miles a year) out on the road photographing different aspects of America that result in photography books and gallery exhibitions. Most notable series have been 15+ year projects like “American Backcourts” , “Barbershops of America” , and “Roadside Meditations”. If I’m not on the road, that means I’m outdoors, hopefully without cell service. Where you will not find me is lying next to a pool.

Marquetry Landscapes of  THE WEST .

Meet our artist:

Lynne Buss

My education and early work background are in manufacturing and mechanical engineering. After several years, I found myself seeking more creative work. Marquetry has been the perfect medium for me. It allows me to work in a tangible way, with a broad variety of woods to depict the soothing natural world of mountain scenery. Since 1985, I have shown my work at art shows, exhibitions and galleries. By continually seeking improvements in design, technique and materials, marquetry provides me with a rich source of problem solving opportunities that drive the creative process forward.

Capturing the beauty of mountains, lakes and valleys in natural wood varieties is my specialty. The variety of colors, textures and figuring available in the wood world is more extensive than most of us realize. I select from among the natural colors of individual wood species to bring out the best contrasts between all features of the design. My hope is that my sceneries will be a reminder of the spectacular beauty of our natural world.

Marquetry Landscapes of  THE WEST defined:

What is the difference between marquetry and inlay?
The difference between inlay and marquetry: in marquetry pieces of wood veneer are applied to the surface of an object, such as a table top, while in inlay they are set into a depression

Lynne’s Technique:

Working from a prepared line drawing of the scenery being created, pieces of carefully selected exotic and domestic veneers are roughly cut for each feature of the design.  A “saw pad”  is constructed layer by layer incorporating each of the veneer pieces according to its place within the design.  Using a motorized scroll saw, each feature is then cut away from the saw pad in turn.  Once cutting is complete, the pieces of the” puzzle” are then sorted and taped together.  The scene is then glued, applied to a backing board and clamped in a vacuum clamp.  When secure, all the tape is removed and allowed to fully dry before sanding and finishing.  Each piece is then mounted in a handcrafted frame. The back is finished with black felt, D hangers, framing wire and a description of the woods used within the scene.
