The Fine Art of Don Dernovich, Landscape Artist

Ice Cold and Crystal Clear
Oil Painting, Framed  24″ x 36″ Image

“In our lifetime, we have seen or been at one of his painting locations..A serene quiet place that made us feel at peace. I look forward to new arrivals!”    Pam Eggemeyer,
Spirits in the Wind Gallery, Director.

The work of Don Dernovich represents his personal thoughts, feelings and ideas about the landscape. His respect for the land and the water, are evident in what Don chooses to paint. “Everything is derived from the earth and is dependent on the earth for survival”, Don says.

Don spends days in the field, sketching, painting and photographing that which interests him. Don’s time outdoors familiarizes him with the natural environment necessary in relating an honest and genuine interpretation of the landscape. Each work conveys the elements inherent to that particular scene. Being aware of the textures, values, shadow, light, edges, shapes, and atmosphere, are what is important. Each painting is an honest commitment to the truth of the scene.

“Nothing come’s easy in painting. Each one is very difficult and controls the way I work. It is a constant struggle between the painting and me. I work intuitively with each brush stroke dictating what I do next. I discipline myself to stick with it, attempting to solve problems as they arise. Above all, I strive to be honest in my work. It is a painting first, showing the human element of the painting process. On close inspection, it becomes obvious that detail is only suggested. The image appears through the control and manipulation of the brush stroke. When I feel the painting is getting close to completion, I will set it aside for a period of time. I will put a frame on it to isolate it from outside distractions and again look at it with a fresh eye. In so doing, I am able to detect changes that need to be done. I then ask myself if it is completed or not. This question is a hard one to answer because I feel I could always do more. One reaches a point, however, when he has to say, enough is enough! Each finished painting lays the groundwork for the next painting … and the next and the next. Painting is what I’m all about. Hopefully it affords a way for me to convey my feelings about the beauty we have on this earth. If I can do this, I then feel I have earned some measure of success”.

Jim Hagstrom’s style is evolving..his Tipi paintings demand your attention. Between the ever changing light, the palette knife texture and bright skies represent power. In Sioux legends, the red represent the sun (energy), yellow represents the rocks and mountains.

New Featured Artist at Spirits in the Wind Gallery; Andrea Cermanski

Andrea Joy Cermanski is an artist who lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, she is inspired by the color and vastness of the New Mexico landscape. Cermanski has been working in acrylic and encaustic for over 23 years and has a Bachelor’s in Art History and a Masters in Art Education. She has exhibited her work in five solo and ten group shows, including Feminists Under Forty, which was curated by Judy Chicago. Cermanski is featured in E. Ashley Rooney’s Contemporary Artists of the Southwest, and has numerous collectors around the country, including two corporate collections. She is currently represented by Gallery Arlo in New Orleans, Spirits in the Wind Gallery in Golden, Colorado, Pez Gordo in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.

Cermanski’s work is a conversation in color inspired by intricacies of the natural world. She incorporates hand – collected earth pigments, minerals, other elements of the New Mexico landscape to bring nature direclty into her work. Extracting her palette from the southwest, her work embodies the delicate interplay of light and color, texture and form. While working, she intuitively synthesizes memories of the land, sky and water, allowing something new to emerge – a metamorphosis. The culmination results in capturing the essence of a place vaguely familiar to us all. Similar to the excitement of recognizing familiar images while watching clouds, her work seeks to grasp the contemplative eye of the viewer
